Physical Education
At Sunnyside Primary Academy, we are dedicated to fostering the holistic development of our pupils through an inclusive and dynamic PE curriculum. Our program aligns with the five key pillars of our curriculum, ensuring pupils are physically fit while developing the skills to succeed socially, emotionally, and academically.
-
Aspiring for Excellence We encourage pupils to set personal goals and challenge themselves through engaging lessons, fitness challenges, and team activities. Our curriculum promotes resilience, ambition, and a lifelong love for physical activity, ensuring pupils reach their full potential while nurturing their well-being.
-
Enriching Language & Communication PE provides a unique opportunity to develop vocabulary related to movement, fitness, and health. By integrating communication skills, pupils are empowered to articulate their physical experiences, make informed decisions, and foster an understanding of healthy living.
-
Cultivating a Strong Community Our PE curriculum emphasises teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship. Pupils work collaboratively in group sports and games, building relationships and a sense of belonging while developing social skills and an appreciation for mutual respect.
-
Broadening Horizons PE broadens cultural awareness by exposing pupils to diverse global sports and activities. This fosters inclusivity, respect for different cultures, and personal growth, helping pupils develop a broader perspective of the world.
-
Building a Knowledge-Rich Foundation With a well-sequenced curriculum, we ensure pupils acquire a deep understanding of physical activity, movement, and health. Our goal is to equip pupils with the knowledge to lead healthy, active lives and to understand the lifelong benefits of fitness.
Implementation
Our PE program provides two hours of dedicated physical education each week, consisting of both indoor and outdoor activities. We follow a structured curriculum using the Primary PE Planning (PPP) Platform, which emphasises skill progression and inclusivity. Pupils' progress is tracked through the PPP PE tracker tool, ensuring they meet national curriculum expectations.
We offer extracurricular clubs and encourage participation in competitive events, while also fostering leadership opportunities through Play Leaders and mini-coaches. This approach nurtures both physical fitness and personal development in a supportive environment.
Impact
Our curriculum encourages pupils to actively engage in their physical development, fostering confidence and a growth mindset. All pupils participate in PE, with a focus on inclusion and the development of healthy habits. Target groups are identified to ensure all pupils make progress towards meeting national curriculum expectations. We offer opportunities for pupils to engage in activities that may not be accessible outside of school, encouraging them to join community clubs and broaden their horizons.
Through increased participation in extracurricular activities, pupils develop leadership skills, particularly through Play Leaders, and are challenged to excel in various competitions. Our program ensures that all pupils, regardless of ability, make significant progress in PE and meet end-of-key-stage expectations.
PPP Scheme of Work
We use the PPP scheme, developed by teachers for teachers, to deliver high-quality PE lessons. This resource supports the development of a variety of sports skills and offers measurable learning journeys for pupils of all abilities.
Key Philosophy
- Every child matters: Providing quality learning opportunities for all abilities.
- Exciting learning journeys: Ensuring clear, measurable progress for all pupils.
- Assessment without levels: Tracking each child's individual progress.
- Free-flowing lessons: Encouraging responsibility, leadership, and development.
PE Kit Reminder
Pupils should wear their PE kit on designated PE days only.
