Art and Design – Intent, Implementation, and Impact

Intent

At Sunnyside Primary Academy we believe that art is a powerful means of self-expression and a fundamental aspect of a well-rounded education. Our art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, nurture imagination, and develop a deep appreciation for the world of visual arts. Our intent is to provide a rich and diverse artistic experience that fosters the holistic development of our primary school pupils. Our Art and Design scheme of work aims to inspire children to develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. Pupils are given opportunity to develop their ability nurture their talents and interest, express their ideas and thoughts about the world as well about learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. This is driven through our four curriculum pillars.

Striving for Excellence:

In Art and Design, we instill a passion for excellence by encouraging our pupils to reach for their personal best in every artistic endeavor. We believe that striving for excellence in art not only leads to the creation of outstanding works but also fosters a mindset of continuous growth and self-improvement. Our pupils learn to set high standards for themselves, embrace challenges as opportunities to learn, and take pride in the effort they invest in their art.

Developing Vocabulary:

We place a strong emphasis on developing vocabulary related to the world of art. We believe that understanding and effectively using art terminology is crucial for pupils to express their ideas and critique artworks intelligently. Through guided discussions, creative exercises, and exposure to various art forms, our pupils build a vocabulary that enables them to describe colors, shapes, textures, artistic techniques, and the emotional impact of art. This deepens their appreciation and understanding of the artistic world around them, nurturing a lifelong love for the language of art.

Building Community:

We recognise the importance of building a sense of community among our pupils. Art provides a unique platform for fostering connections and collaboration. Through group projects, peer critiques, and art-related events, we encourage our pupils to work together, share ideas, and support each other's creative journeys. This sense of community not only enhances their artistic experiences but also promotes empathy, respect, and a supportive atmosphere where every voice is valued. Our pupils learn that art is not just an individual expression but also a shared experience that can bring people together, creating a vibrant and inclusive artistic community within our school.

Expanding Cultural Experiences:

We believe in expanding cultural experiences through the exploration of diverse artistic traditions from around the world. We introduce our pupils to these varied artistic landscapes, to gain a deeper appreciation for the beauty and diversity of human creativity. This exposure not only broadens their horizons but also fosters cultural awareness and respect for different perspectives, enriching their artistic understanding and contributing to their development as global citizens.

 

Implementation

Our Art Curriculum is underpinned by Kapow and is designed with strands that run throughout. These are.

• generating ideas
• using sketchbooks
• making skills including formal elements (line shape tone texture pattern and colour)
• knowledge of artists
• evaluating and analysing

All of our lessons are sequential which allows the children to build their skills and knowledge and apply them to a range of outcomes. Our approach allows pupils to revise and build on their previous learning each unit is organised into four key areas

• drawing
• painting and mixed media
• sculpture
• 3D craft and design

 

Our national curriculum mapping shows which by units cover each of the national curriculum attainment targets as well as the strands and our progression of knowledge and skills shows the skills that are taught and how these skills develop to ensure that attainment targets is securely met by the end of each key stage.

Impact

Our curriculum is designed in a way that children are actively involved in the evaluation, dialogue and decision making about the quality of their work and the improvements they need to make. By taking part in regular discussions and decision-making processes children will not only know facts and key information about art but they will be able to talk confidently about their own learning and how to improve.  Pupils should leave Sunnyside Primary Academy equipped with a range of techniques and the confidence and creativity to form a strong foundation for their art and design learning in key stage 3 and beyond.

The expected impact following this curriculum is that children will;

• Produce creative work exploring and recording their ideas and experiences.
• Be proficient in drawing, painting ,sculpture and other craft art and design techniques.
• Evaluate and analyse creative works using subject specific language.
• Know about great artists and the historical and cultural development of their art.
• Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the national curriculum for Art and Design
